Success Story 1

I try to make math as relatable to my clients' lives as possible.  That works differently for every student.  With one student who loved and excelled at lacrosse, we framed the 3 keys of math problem solving around lacrosse and utilized metaphors from stringing lacrosse sticks to ripping pipe down goals.  This made the learning more relatable, engaging, fun, and cool.  When learning becomes those things, it happens at a dramatically accelerated rate and students are happier overall.  This particular lacrosse player improved from a 570 to a 730 on the SAT and got a scholarship to the college of his choice.

Success Story 2

I have worked with many students who understand the math brilliantly but who struggle to perform when it counts most on tests.  My background in performance psychology allows me to help those students take charge of their minds and believe in their own abilities.  One particular student would constantly stop herself halfway through problems because of self doubt, even though she was on a direct path to the solution! I helped her take ownership over her brilliance by helping her push through her confusion on problems, and to her surprise, she would often get problems right, even though she was sure she was wrong.  Enough moments like these, and she had to start accepting her abilities and even feeling confident in them, just as she deserved.  Towards the end of the year, she wrote me this note:

"Dear Mr. Davenport,

Thanks so much for being you, I'll never forget the time when I was having an anxiety attack on the test and you came to my desk and wrote, 'You got this :).'  It made my day really, and it was my best math test to that point.  I've written 'You got this :)' on every math test since and as you know, have been doing much better :)" - 8th Grade Student

Success Story 3

I have worked with many students who have trouble focusing and paying attention to their work or to math in particular.  I can relate.  I have developed a variety of strategies to make math more attention grabbing and unleash the dormant potential of many students.  For one student, I realized we should structure our sessions around the number of problems we solved rather than around time.  As a result of this approach, the student was deeply incentivized to finish the problems in front of him, because that was the only way through the session!  Even better, the more he focused, the more he learned, and the faster the session went.  By empowering this student and incentivizing his focus, we were able to prepare successfully for his high school placement exam.

Results: Students average more than two years of math growth per academic year.  Students have gained 140+ points on the SAT.  Students improve their grades in school significantly.  Students have stronger character and enjoy learning more.
